The source of the ancient swamps

Spores are the tiny seeds of many plants. Those of a tree fern may be less than 2mm. Growing on the underside of the tree ferns fronds, spores grow in a little package called a sorus. When the time is right, the sorus bursts and releases the miniature spores. Yet from such miniscule origins came all our coal!
