It begins with our rubbish!

Bio-energy is perhaps the most familiar of the renewable energies, as it begins in our homes.

To begin the process, rubbish must be ground into small pieces. It is then stirred and blended into a giant soup, but hardly fit for eating...

In the sludge tower a process takes place known as anaerobic digestion. This simply means there is no air in there, but it is digested or 'eaten' in a chemical processes and through microbiotic action. Solids are broken down into liquids and gases - enormous amounts of them - are released.

The sludge, or slurry, can then be refined and prepared for use as energy.
